At The Refuge, we believe that recovery depends on treating the addiction or destructive behavior as well as resolving the underlying Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma. Whether it is drugs and alcohol, sex, gambling, cutting, depression, eating disorder or any number of the other destructive behaviors and process addictions, these behaviors become the way to handle the pain associated with the PTSD and trauma. Therefore, The Refuge treats both the addiction and the trauma and PTSD, so clients can embrace recovery and leave in a healthier state of life. PTSD/Trauma

The Refuge program is designed to treat a wide variety of ways that a person copes with unresolved PTSD and trauma. Unresolved PTSD and trauma manifests itself in a number of self destructive ways that include self harm, overeating or restricting to mollify negative feelings, gambling, workaholic, and internet addiction. Clients that suffer from PTSD or unresolved trauma often pedal backwards a lot faster than forward. This means that as a clinician, we must remember to not trigger or cause a negative reaction when treating this fragile population.

The Refuge's approach to these behaviors is to look at the trauma/PTSD and the underlying emotional pain that fuels these behaviors and heal these emotions through a combination of 12 step recovery, holistic approaches and experiential modalities. Trauma/PTSD treatment is visceral, sensory and cellular. Clinicians must build trust, create safety, bear witness, include family, and cannot pass judgment. Therapists at The Refuge are specifically trained in handling clients that suffer from trauma/PTSD.
