April 13, 2018: Denver, CO

Please join The Refuge - A Healing Place for a networking and CE luncheon in Denver, CO  as we present, Finding A New Tribe: Helping Young Men Heal from Childhood Sexual Abuse and Addiction.

Presenter: Brennon P Moore MS, CTT, CADC-II, LPC

Brief Description:

It's an undeniable reality that individuals seeking addiction treatment are getting younger each year. Often times, younger male clients will be labeled as defiant, unwilling to make change, lacking acceptance of their addiction, and resistant to authority. As a result of these classifications, these young men are often discharged or transferred to other facilities for the symptoms they need treatment for the most, and the underlying force behind these destructive behaviors are ignored. This presentation explores the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse among young men seeking mental health and addiction care and how a history of this may create the defiant client we see before us. By finding A New Tribe, these young men may also find meaning not in spite of their trauma story, but because of it!

Learning Objectives:

1) Identify the ways unresolved childhood sexual trauma leads to behaviors that impede a young male clients development as well as their path to recovery.

2) Recognize the way trauma drives these young male clients and how addiction is often a desperate attempt to survive, compensate or cope.

3) Assess the importance of finding a new tribe of men where re-learning of healthy coping skills can begin, normalization can occur and trauma healing may begin.

4) Explain experiential techniques employed by the clinical team members at The Refuge to break these destructive patterns.

5) Assess the importance of finding meaning and strength from our trauma to provide a more solid foundation for long-term healing and sobriety.
