What We Treat

At The Refuge, we believe that recovery depends on treating the addiction or destructive behavior as well as resolving the underlying trauma. Whether it be drugs and alcohol, sex, gambling, cutting, or any number of other destructive behaviors, the behavior becomes the way to handle the pain associated with the trauma. Therefore, we treat both the addiction and the trauma, so that recovery can occur.

Trauma/PTSD
Our program is designed to deal with the myriad of ways that a person copes with unresolved trauma. Unresolved trauma manifests itself in a number of self destructive ways that include self harm, eating or restricting to mollify negative feelings, gambling, workaholism and internet addiction.

The Refuge’s approach to these behaviors is to look at the underlying trauma – the underlying emotional pain – that fuels these behaviors and heal these emotions through a combination of 12 step recovery and trauma work. Please browse through this website for a brief explanation of the treatment modalities that we use.

Substance Abuse
Our common definition of addiction – using alcohol, heroin, meth, marijuana, prescription drugs or any other mood altering substance or mood altering behavior – is when a person is physically, mentally, and/or spiritually dependent on the substance to feel better, or to feel normal.

At The Refuge we look at the underlying causes for a client’s addiction, essentially we focus on the etiology of their addiction. We look at the dependency, and we ask why. Why does this person have the need to feel better, or even to feel normal, using external substances or inappropriate behaviors. We take the time to let our clients reveal the often untold and secret ‘why’ that they have not been able to speak of before coming to treatment.

Sex Addiction
A most serious illness too easily overlooked or dismissed due to the stigma of shame. Sex & Love Addiction is defined in the SAA website as “the essence of all addiction is the addict’s experience of powerlessness over a compulsive behavior, resulting in their lives becoming unmanageable.” Sexual compulsivity, the preoccupation with sexualized thinking can consume and overwhelm the addict’s life leading one to deepening dangerous behaviors.
