At The Refuge, we believe that recovery depends on treating the addiction or destructive behavior as well as resolving the underlying PTSD and trauma. Whether it is drugs and alcohol, sex, gambling, cutting, depression, eating disorder or any number of the other destructive behaviors and process addictions, these behaviors become the way to handle the pain associated with the PTSD and trauma. Therefore, The Refuge treats both the addiction and the trauma and PTSD, so clients can embrace recovery and leave in a healthier state of life. Sex and Love Addiction

An illness that is often overlooked or dismissed due to the stigma of shame is Sex & Love Addiction. Sex & Love Addiction is defined on the SAA website as "the essence of all addiction is the addict's experience of powerlessness over a compulsive behavior, resulting in their lives becoming unmanageable". Sexual compulsion is the preoccupation with sexualized thinking that can consume and overwhelm the addict's life, leading one to make inappropriate decisions based on sexual impulse. Often when a young man or woman's childhood lacks a healthy connection between a parent or family member, or is sexually abused by a family member, friend or stranger, they develop a misunderstanding of the words love and sex. These young people will confuse sexual abuse, neglect, or inappropriate affection for love and sex, and seek these destructive behaviors in relationships later on in life. At The Refuge, we provide treatment for these behaviors by introducing clients to the correct meanings of love, sex and intimacy. Individuals that come to The Refuge suffer from some form of Trauma/PTSD that they experienced earlier on in life and Sex and Love Addiction is one of the ways these clients cope with that Trauma/PTSD.

Due to the fragile nature of this addiction and clientele, The Refuge staffs multiple CSATs (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist). In addition, many of our clinicians have attended some form of Sex Addiction training or workshop. This allows The Refuge to correctly treat person(s) suffering from any sexual addiction. Throughout the week The Refuge offers specially designed groups, activities and assignments that are designed for Sex and Love Addiction clients. These groups are facilitated by one of our CSATs and are intense and focused directly on Sex and Love Addiction and its underlying issues.
