Ropes Course Drug Addiction Treatment

The Ropes Course

The Ropes Course provides skill building and self-awareness opportunities in an experiential learning environment. Rehab participants learn about problem solving, cooperation, communication, risk taking, decision making, consequences, trust, self-esteem, and other elements that affect the dynamics of a group, or as individuals. As groups work together on activities, they are facilitated through physical and mental challenges. Facilitators process with the participants during and after each element.

The Ropes Course gives us the opportunity to create a safe situation where a participant may face the flight, fight, or freeze response. In this therapeutic rehab opportunity we can process the reactions a trauma survivor must understand to achieve and maintain sobriety and a healthy life. Many trauma survivors get stuck in the freeze response when fear enters their lives, and helping them to move through this fear in the moment for some is a life changing event. Those that have the flight response and run from their fear have an opportunity to build self-esteem and confidence by pushing through the fear response. Those in the fight response tend towards excitement in a Ropes Course. Slowing them down and forcing them to be in the moment can teach them coping skills for everyday life. Trauma is a reaction to an experience and the Ropes Course is therapy as an experience.

The Ropes Course staff goes through a rigorous certification process with regular re-certification courses that reinforces both the therapeutic value and safety of this highly valuable experiential mode of therapy.

Safety is the number one priority of the course. This includes both physical safety and emotional safety. While participants are encouraged to take part in all activities, The Refuge, A Healing Place works on the idea of “challenge by choice”. This means that the individual only does as much as they are comfortable with physically or emotionally.
