Eating Disorder Treatment

Learn more about treatment for eating disorders at The Refuge, A Healing Place

Eating disorders are complex challenges that resist simple solutions. If you or someone you care about has been struggling with an eating disorder, it is important for you to understand that professional treatment is necessary.

Treatment at Oak House includes seven full days of focused programming each week. All clients follow personalized plans that are based upon a thorough assessment of their unique strengths, needs, and goals.

To best prepare you for successful recovery, it’s important that you have a comprehensive, personalized treatment experience. The services you receive, and the level or levels of care at which you heal, will depend upon a variety of factors that are unique to you.

Developing the ideal treatment plan for you is a matter of identifying the type of eating disorder that you’ve been experiencing, determining if you’ve been dealing with any co-occurring disorders, and understanding any other matters that may have contributed to or been impacted by your eating disorder.

When you heal at The Refuge, you will complete a detailed assessment to ensure that your treatment team is aware of all issues that have been affecting your health. Based upon this assessment, you’ll receive focused care that will empower you to meet your specific goals and achieve long-term recovery.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider The Refuge as a treatment center for eating disorders

Untreated eating disorders can have a devastating impact on all areas of your life. In addition to posing a serious threat to your physical health, eating disorders can also jeopardize your relationships, impede your academic progress, derail your career, and otherwise undermine your ability to live a productive and satisfying life.

When you struggle with an eating disorder, you may mislead, lie to, or distance yourself from friends and family members in order to hide your behaviors. This can deny you an essential source of support at a time when you most need it. Your unhealthy eating habits may cause you to miss school or work, or otherwise fall short of personal or professional responsibilities. This can lead to academic failure, job loss, and resultant harm to your socioeconomic well-being.

Eating disorders may also put you at increased risk for certain co-occurring disorders, which can compound your suffering and further complicate your ability to regain your health. Without proper care, this can put you into a downward spiral, one that may feel impossible to escape.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. When you receive comprehensive, personalized care at an effective eating disorder treatment center, your life can get much better. At The Refuge, we can provide you with the focused treatment you need to address and overcome all of the issues that have contributed to your struggles with eating disorders. With our help, you can regain control over your thoughts and actions, and resume your pursuit of a promising future.

Our Philosophy

Our treatment center’s philosophy and benefits

At The Refuge, we always consider the entire person when we create a treatment plan, involving all aspects of what makes each client unique. We’re constantly reevaluating our clients to make sure all their needs are met in a supportive atmosphere. As a holistic treatment center, we work closely with each client to guide them on the pathway towards recovery from eating disorders.

Our multidisciplinary treatment team includes licensed clinicians, a staff physician, a psychiatrist, and a registered dietitian. This team monitors each person’s health and well-being and provides support during mealtimes.

Types of Treatment

Types of eating disorder treatment offered at The Refuge, A Healing Place

The Refuge features a wide range of options for clients who are struggling with eating disorders. When you’re admitted to our residential treatment center, you will undergo a number of assessments in order to make certain our treatment team understands how best to treat you. Our medical examination will determine if you are struggling with medical complications, while our psychiatric evaluation will diagnose any co-occurring disorders.

Your eating disorder treatment team will take the results of these assessments and work with you and your loved ones to create a plan of care for your stay with us.

Medication may be used at the beginning of your stay if it can help ease or alleviate certain symptoms. The type of medication you are prescribed, and the amount of time you continue to receive it, will be based solely on what’s best for you. Your medication usage will be closely monitored by your eating disorder treatment center team, and will be modified as needed to ensure you’re receiving the maximum benefit.

Individual therapy is provided to address personal issues related to your struggles with eating disorders, and to identify links between the eating disorder and any co-occurring disorders. Our therapists use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which addresses errors or distortions in thinking. CBT can help you replace maladaptive thoughts with healthier ways of evaluating and responding to your environment.

Group therapy is a common type of therapy for individuals who are healing from eating disorders at The Refuge. Among its many benefits, group therapy can help you form productive relationships with others who are receiving care for eating disorders, learn to work together to solve problems, and develop healthy ways to process difficult emotions. While you are in treatment for an eating disorder at The Refuge, you’ll take part in several types of group therapy. For example, process groups discuss issues related to a common theme or co-occurring problems, such as trauma, substance abuse, or suicidal ideation. Our skills-based groups focus on topics like developing new coping strategies, re-entering social situations, avoiding risks for triggering eating disorder relapse, and identifying strategies for dealing with co-occurring conditions.

Family therapy is an important aspect of eating disorder treatment at our center. We understand that your struggles with eating disorders may have impacted your family and friends. We also appreciate the important role that your loved ones can play in the healing process. During family sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your eating disorder, your treatment, and the progress you’ve made. Your loved ones will have the chance to discuss ways in which the eating disorder has affected their lives. They’ll also learn how best to support you during and after your eating disorder treatment.

Our treatment center also offers a variety of evidence-based methods designed to complement traditional therapies. Based on need and availability, these therapeutic methods may include the following:

  • Detoxification (as needed)
  • Psychiatric support and medication management
  • Individual, group, and family therapy
  • Medical and psychiatric supervision
  • 24/7 nursing support
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Exposure outings
  • Supportive meals and meal preparation
  • Group shopping trips
  • Nutritional counseling and education
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
  • 12-Step education and support
  • Therapeutic massage and yoga
  • Art therapy
