Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder in which symptoms can become so overwhelming that you may find it challenging to function in daily life. Many people who have GAD also have one or more co-occurring disorder, a history of trauma (often occurring in early life), or other significant life stressors. The residential program at The Refuge provides the safe environment to address the multifaceted nature of your anxiety.
Before you arrive, our admissions staff will begin to gather information about the difficulties you are experiencing. Combined with the results of the evaluation conducted by your treatment team, this information will help the staff at The Refuge determine the best treatment plan for you.
Why Should You Consider Residential Treatment at The Refuge?
If you are experiencing a state of anxiety most of the time, life can be very difficult. Some people with anxiety disorders respond by avoiding friends and family, ignoring activities they used to enjoy, or staying at home to avoid having their anxiety triggered. GAD can affect your ability to make decisions, concentrate, remember things, hold a job, attend school, or interact socially. GAD can become so debilitating you may feel as if you can no longer function in major areas of your life. To avoid the symptoms, you may self-medicate with drugs or alcohol, develop severe pain due to muscle tension, or feel irritable. Some people with GAD may feel hopeless enough that they consider suicide as a means to end their emotional pain.

Types of Therapy we Use to Treat Anxiety
When you come to us for help with your anxiety disorders, we’ll perform a variety of evaluations to best allow us to understand your needs. A medical evaluation will determine if you’re struggling with any medical complications or causes for your anxiety disorder. Our psychological examinations will help us understand the trauma you’ve been through, the presence of any co-occurring mental disorders, and the severity of your anxiety.
Medication may be used at the beginning of your stay to help control the symptoms of your anxiety. Often, a combination of antidepressants and anti-anxiety agents will help you gain control over your troubling symptoms and allow you to focus on your recovery. Some people may only require a short-term course of medication to help control their symptoms, while others may need a more long-term medication approach to help treat any co-occurring disorders. The usage of medication will be frequently monitored and adjusted by your treatment team.
Individual therapy is used to address personal issues related to your anxiety and work through the problems it has caused in your life. You’ll learn more adaptive ways of coping with your anxiety as well as ways to reduce triggers for anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective type of psychotherapy for anxiety as CBT helps to understand the way that negative thoughts can impact behaviors. We’ll work with you to challenge these negative thoughts and replace them with more positive ways of seeing the world.
Group therapy is common type of therapy we use to help you connect with others who are struggling with similar challenges. Groups allow you to work together in a social setting to grow, learn, and heal. At The Refuge, we offer many different types of groups. Process groups will help you work through challenges with others who have similar problems, while Psycho-educational groups provide information related to anxiety, medication, and co-occurring disorders. Groups can help you develop new coping strategies, learning to re-enter social situations, and risk factors for anxiety triggers.
Family therapy is an important aspect of treatment at The Refuge as the support of your loved ones can make a huge difference in your recovery. We’ll work with you and your loved ones to help identify ways they can support your recovery, allow your loved ones the chance to express their feelings, and provide your loved ones with referrals to outpatient programs to help with their healing.
As a holistic treatment center, The Refuge offers a number of experiential services designed to complement traditional therapeutic methods. Experiential programs may include:

Continuing Care – What Comes Next?
When your time with us draws to a close, we’ll work closely with you to determine the next steps in your recovery process. Some of our clients choose to enter a program which allow you to work on your recovery during the day, while reintegrating back into your life in the evenings. Some individuals may choose to enter our partial hospitalization program (PHP), while others may feel they have made enough progress in our residential program that they are ready to discharge to a stable home environment with referrals to outpatient therapy and community resources. The Refuge will ensure that no matter your next steps, you’re comfortable and secure in your recovery path.
